FEEDBACK FROM STOKE PRINCIPALS
Today we had some relevant issues for us all to think about:
* Stephen Alder from CYFS came and spoke to us and described the process of referral to case worker. I wont describe all of the comments that came out but needless to say we had a lot of dissatisfaction. The answer we were assured was to contact the head Social Worker Maree Meechang with any concerns anout referrals etc. See Pete for more info.
* Tahunanui is looking at bringing the Science Dome (Blow up Astronomy thingee) to Nelson cost of $8oo a day in 2010 but if we all want it it could be cheaper. What do we think, we are doing it now really??
* Professional Standards: Don't get spooked by bad press wait until the MOE presentation at the end of the term and then we can get spooked.
* A lot of discussion was created around the classification date of children at school entry (this all came about with the Knox family moving to Tahunanui). The Nelson NPA have now all agreed to make the date the 1st of April. This has a huge impact on your classes as about 4 chn in every class will now be re-classified a year lower than they are. See me for the list.
* Schoolwide testing in November has now gone cluster wide with the hope that BIS will use our results to get straight into teaching rather than waiting 6 weeks to test. Discussion was held around what tests most of us use it appears we mainly use PAT and STAR but interest was shown in EAsTTle.
* THE GOOD NEWS: We finish school a day earlier now due to our ICT day being used as a MOE call back ie we now finish on the 17th of December not the 18th. Next year we start with Teacher Only Days on the 2nd and 3rd and start Thursday the 4th and finish December 17th.
* The ICT contract needs requires us to appoint an ICT leader in our school and another teacher who will support development. The leader will be required to facilitate change at Stoke School in our pedagogy and our ICT's. I see the support person changing as we will have Staff development days for the leaders and support teachers and for one term we may send the leader and one teacher and then the next term send another, this way we are giving everyone the opportunity to develop skills during school time. Please register your interest with Pete.

WEEK 8
* A Huge Thank You to everyone for their help and support with Saturdays Gala. A special thank you to Carol and Fiona who put so many hours of time into the preparation.
The one downer for me was the hangi, the first supply of hangi having some undercooked and then the second supply being so late, I feel gutted for the guys that put in so much time to prepare it.
But we mustn't dwell on one aspect as the day was beautiful, we had a huge amount of people attend, the school looked great the White Elephant was a stand out success and people enjoyed the entertainment. WE'RE STOKED! Thanks
* This week we wish Dean well for 4 days in Marahau, I am attending Mon/Tues, Donna is attending Tues night and Wed/Thur. Tane is there for the whole camp. Dean Schneider is in Donna's Room.
* Student Teacher Tracey Williams starts in Andrews class this week.
* DANCING WITH THE STARS: Sam Hitchcock and Tamati will be at Stoke School on Wednesday at 11:15am. They will have TV crew and Newspaper journo's attending please prep your kids to show utmost excitement for a past student. The paper wants to focus on Nelson girl doing so well not Tamati hence they are starting at Stoke before going to Nelson Girls where they presume the Girls will mob Tamati. So do we do a banner, posters welcome back Sam? I don't know but hype your kids up so they know who she is, you can view past programmes online
http://tvnz.co.nz/content/dancing_with_the_stars/ondemand_video
* Hilary is not going to continue with the fruit as this is difficult with her injury, so she needs some jobs, I will get her to clean the staffroom, what else?
* David Kirklan Equating Study Rooms 10 and 9 off until further notice.
* Staff Meeting on Tuesday will be facilitated by Sarah looking at Maths planning, the idea is that the seniors will play online and the juniors will discuss ideas with Sarah.
* Admin Meeting on Thursday Dean Schneider will like to discuss an Enviro home awards programme.
* Keeping Ourselves Safe starts this week, I will be teeing up parent meetings with Evan, one during school and one straight after.
Have a great start to the week, with myself and Dean away Jane is Acting Principal.

Staff Meeting Week 5
Stoke School Staff Meeting Agenda
Tuesday 3rd of March
2009
Notes of Interest:
Agenda: Admin Quick stuff:
• Coming back there is a feeling of stress. You are all doing a wonderful job and it is important to just concentrate on the basics. No one should be stressed regarding ICT(or anything else), we haven’t started, you are not expected to jump on any band wagon, all we need is for everyone to be open to new ideas and enjoy the possibilities that they present.
• Roll count of 178 is high and we are exploring ideas around opening a new senior class but this will mean losing the “One Day School” extension programmes.
• Please keep an eye on our blog to outline news or events: http://stokestaff.blogspot.com/
• APPRAISAL CHATS: This week I will have a chat with every teacher regarding job descriptions and personal goals.
The timetable is:
Tuesday 1:30 Jane
2:00 Dean
2:30 Sarah
Friday: 9:00 Amanda
9:30 Gaye
10:00 Donna
11:00 Liz

AWESOME GUYS TO READ YOUR COMMENTS AND INFO REGARDING SWIMMING SPORTS.
We have had a gret time, intense and definitly need to get some of you up here next year and look at sending some to Ulearn in CHCH later this year.
There is 1200 teachers here and the fanfare is amazing.
I have had some very interesting lectures and some resounding themes came through about developing a team vision, the need for positivity and how negativity of any kind just drags down the ship and is a hindrance to our vision.
Great ideas about developing teaching concepts with walk throughs and looking closely what effective classrooms look, sound and feel like.
See you soon.

PETE@LEARNING@SCHOOL
Hi everyone, I am here after circling Wellington for 20 minutes due to airport closure.
I have been to some wonderful workshops (don't groan Jane I know you will be thinking "What's he gonna want to do now") but it is all about developing shared vision.
Our keynote this morning was Professor Andy Hargreaves from the USA. He was excellent at discussing developing a shared vision across our local schools, our school, community and teachers.
Session 2 was EPS 2.0 breakdown, which was the survey we all did. We discussed how to use this info and where to from here.
Session 3 was Values Based Education with Julia Atkin, wonderful exploration of how we develop values and beliefs and the importance for children to develop the capacity of expressing values. It will be great for those boys who are involved in the rough and tumble.
Session 4 Looking at Computer capability, what suits our needs PC versus Mac, 25 netbooks or less big computers. Very thought provoking.
I have been talking to the Etime facilitator and are arranging 3 or so to go on a tour of CHCH schools later this year.
Cheers. Have fun.

Notes for the Week
Dean Schneider is in Rm 11 Mon-Wed
Adrian is in Rm 10 Thursday, Friday
ADMIN MEETING still on Thursday morning, Dean/Jane will organize Swimming Display
Please ensure Interschool swimmers have notes for parents outlining times for the 4th.
After being in everyone's classroom over the last 2 weeks it was great to feel the warmth and friendliness from the students. You have all set up wonderful environments and great work is being done on Our Place. I have a list of the classrooms where positive reward systems weren't in place, I will pop back to those classes when I return. Well done the classes that have systems as the children were really responding to them.
Parent Letters for physical behaviours are on my desk if need be.
Hilary Windleborn is going to be preparing the fruit for our school each morning to allow Fiona to get stuck in with class programmes.
Ainslee from University of Canterbury is in to see Donna and Andrew on Wednesday.
Have fun, I will post updates of my week as I gather tiny gems of info.

BOS 2009
BOARD OF STUDENTS @STOKE SCHOOL 2009
The concept of Board of Students is similar to the School Council. I want them to feel ownership of the school and feel they have contributed. We will meet every 3 weeks in the staffroom to discuss plans. Every class elects a representative and they will have a buddy rep from Room 11. If you are holding a class meeting to gather ideas you may want to invite the buddy to act as a recorder or someone to help your class rep run the meeting.
If possible it would be great to have a class meeting before the school meeting and then a class meeting after to debrief ideas.
First meeting this year is on Friday the 6th of March at 1:30pm in the staffroom.

LEXIA
We have been approached by Lexia to be a model school for their programme to enhance reading ability across all levels and abilities. This is best organized with computers in every class and is web based or server based, apparently the web based option provides a lot more reporting and resourcing functions. We are looking at trial classes to get underway and then look at viability to go across the whole school.
If you are interested Pete has some info.

Professional Development
Who has been to Eric Frangenheim?
He is fantastic at motivating the classroom teacher in using a range of powerful cognitive and co-operative thinking tools. It is expensive at $175 plus reliever but if you are willing to come back and share his ideas in a staff meeting/ syndicate meeting then see Pete. We will send 2 people. It is on Wednesday the 18th of March.
